Constructing Compound Words
This recipe I found and have modified off of a first grade teacher's website: (http://thefirstgradesweetlife.blogspot.ca/2011/02/reading-centers.html). Students work to form compound words using a bag full of 2 different colour unifix cubes. Each unifix cube will have a different letter on them. Each colour of cubes will form a different word. Students will have to first construct simple words and then combine words to form compound words. I like this activity because students can work with a partner/independently to construct words. This activity is open-ended enough that it can be added to a centre rotation.
