What's That?/What are They Thinking?
This recipe I found and have modified off of a Kindergarten teacher's website: (http://twelveweeksholiday.blogspot.co.nz/2012/03/stuck-for-oral-language-ideas.html). I like this activity because it can be done with multiple levels of learners to varying degrees (it has a universal design which can be done with ELL's, non-ELL's, or students with varying learning disabilities). It can be used as a 'hook' activity or as a mini lesson of exploring points of view. There is little prep work involved and can be used in conjunction with many stories.

Primarily: Oral Language
Secondary: Knowledge Building Activity Objective:
These two activities are designed to encourage oral language building with students.
In the first activity, What is it? (see photo 2) the students are given a random image (or part of an image) and asked to express 'what they think it could be'. To give all students time to think up ideas, teachers can begin with a think-pair-share. Ideas are then recorded under image. In the second activity 'What are They Thinking?' (see photo 3) students are given an image of people or a person and asked to make an inference/describe what they think the person might be thinking. Before recording thoughts, talk with children about clues that might help inform us as to what they are thinking (i.e., uniforms, facial expressions, body language etc.). Extensions:
